Sports Specific Rehabilitation & Conditioning

rehabilitation services melbourne
By Michael Hall

Successful sports injury rehabilitation requires an intimate understanding of all the physical, psychological and social implications of the injury itself as well as a detailed knowledge of the physical demands and biomechanical considerations of the sport. For example, a tennis player with a shoulder problem will need a different conditioning program to a footballer. Likewise, the sports rehabilitation therapist needs to condition an elite athlete to a higher level than a recreational sports person. Consequently, each sports conditioning and rehabilitation program must be tailored not only to your needs, but also to the demands of the sport that you play.

Sports Therapy Rehabilitation – Going to the Next Level

The fastest way to recover from injury is to teach you how to stop the things which cause it in the first place. Clues as to the source and cause of your problem are often gained through getting a detailed history of your condition. These clues can then be tested by a variety of techniques and tools to determine the cause of your problem.

Bodywise Health – The Best Sports Rehabilitation Centre?

At Bodywise Health, we take sports and rehabilitation therapy to the next level. Just some of the examination techniques that we use include:

  1. Comprehensive Biomechanical Examinationto analyze your body’s alignment;
  2. Real Time Ultrasoundto determine that correct timing and activation of your core supporting muscles;
  3. Electromyographyto give feedback as to whether muscles are contracting at the right time and with the right intensity;
  4. Posture Pro, a software program, which gives a computerized analysis of the stresses on your body;
  5. Video Analysiswhich involves filming movement (e.g. golf / tennis swing) so that it can be analyzed and any abnormal patterning can be corrected;
  6. Gait Scanwhich measures the amount and timing of foot pressure during walking and running and helps identify and rectify problems to do with the feet and legs.

By combining the results of each of these tests, enables us to identify both the source and cause of your problem which allows a targeted sports rehabilitation program to be devised and implemented.

Person specific, movement specific and sport / function specific, your sports and rehabilitation therapy program is performed one on one under the instruction of your sports injury therapist to make sure that the “injuring” stresses are eliminated and that your movement becomes as effective and efficient as possible.

Your posture, movement patterns, muscle activation, joint control, balance, power and grace will be monitored, perfected and progressed, ensuring that you enjoy the energy and freedom of a body working optimally. This not only prevents the reoccurrence of your physical problem, but helps to deliver sustained improvements in movement, function and sports performance.

Custom Orthotics in Melbourne

dry needle physical therapy

By Michael Hall

Walking, running and in fact every time you put your feet on the ground, involves a complex interaction of the joints, muscles and nervous system control of your whole body. It stands to reason therefore, that all injuries which involve having your feet on the ground, must involve an assessment of the activity as a whole as well as an examination of each muscle and joint involved in the process.

This is the physiotherapist advantage. Physiotherapists can analyze your standing, walking and running as a whole as well as break each movement down to its component parts. Physiotherapists can assess the mobility of joints, the strength of muscles and the control of movements, determine deficits and analyze causes. Not only that, but physiotherapists can then use “hands on” techniques to free up specific joints, loosen muscles and mobilize the nervous system, techniques all designed to create the optimal environment for healing. These techniques also make rehabilitative exercise more effective, which makes postural and movement correction more effective. Consequently, all the treatment that we perform at Bodywise Health is not just directed at getting your back, hip or knee better, but importantly directed at getting you back doing the things you love to do whether be hiking in the country, walking in the park or going for a run.

The problem

Up until this stage there have been two problems.

The first problem was that assessments often weren’t optimally objective, often involving observation or even video-taping a person as they walked or ran on a treadmill. These assessments still involved estimates of the biomechanics of the body. The second was that assessments simply weren’t relevant. A plaster cast was made of the feet in sitting or standing, which had absolutely no relevance to walking or running. Therefore this type of assessment couldn’t adequately provide a solution for leg and body problems associated with these activities.

The solution

Gait scan has now changed all of this. Now weight bearing assessments are both relevant and objective. Gait scan scans each foot, measuring the amount and timing of pressure from each part of the foot at 300 times per second as you stand, squat or walk. This objective data has been validated and verified and an enormous data bank of information has been gathered in the 25 years it has been used in Canada. By comparing your gait scan data with the existing data and combining this with information gained through a clinical examination, accurate, objective clinical findings can be made not just for your foot, but for your knee, hip and even your back.

Gait scan is a fantastic tool which provides the objective clinical details needed to provide long term orthotic solutions for many physical problems. These include problems such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs (pain on the under surface of the foot), hallux valgus (big toe pain), meta-tarsalgia (toe pain), mid-tarsal joint arthritis, chondromalacia patellae (knee cap pain), iliotibial band fasciitis (pain on the outside of the knee) and many others.

Experience permanent relief, not just a quick fix

Gait scan orthotics permanently change the physical stresses on your body every time you stand. By doing this, they can permanently unload or eliminate the stresses on your painful body part, thereby providing permanent relief. Combined with “hands on” soft tissue and joint techniques as well as precise corrective muscle activation training, balance, walking/running and functional retraining, gait scan orthotics provide the ultimate in long term relief and improved physical performance of many activities.

So if you have a long term foot, ankle, knee, hip or even back problem, gait scan orthotics may be the answer that you are looking for. They may save you months of therapy and years of pain.

By Michael Hall

Over the past 20 years, clinical pilates has become the premier physical conditioning, exercise rehabilitation and injury prevention modality.

And for more than 10 years, Bodywise Health physiotherapists who have undertaken extensive clinical pilates courses and training have been providing clinical pilates exercises and training to people in the Bayside suburbs of Elwood, Elsternwick, Sandringham, Highett, Cheltenham, Black Rock and Beaumaris and more generally across Melbourne.

Ideal for both younger and more senior people, clinical pilates provides the best attributes of all physical training – low impact, core strengthening, muscle toning, balance training and alignment correcting exercise.

By targeting core stability, limb flexibility, movement control, body awareness and balance, clinical pilates corrects the problems that often cause injury – joint mal-alignment, muscle imbalance, poor movement habits and lack of mind / body awareness.

Through correcting postural alignment and movement mechanics, it eliminates the mechanical causes of pain. Then through progressively training yours control, flexibility, toning and strengthening are increased. This results in reduced fatigue, increased energy and improved performance of every day and sports activities.

Pilates Assessment

Your clinical pilates program begins with two one on one assessment and instruction sessions. These sessions involve:

  1. Comprehensive Biomechanical Examination to analyse your body’s alignment;
  2. Real Time Ultrasound to determine that correct timing and activation of your core muscles;
  3. Explanation of the objectives and method of clinical pilates;
  4. Introduction to the pilates equipment;
  5. Instruction as to the correct technique when performing the exercises;

Pilates One on One or Pilates Group – Your Choice

Based on these findings, a clinical pilates program is then devised and tailored to your needs. Your personalised clinical pilates program may continue to be performed on a one on one basis with your physiotherapist, or you may choose to join with up to three other people, in one of our pilates groups.

Performed for 60 minutes, in small groups in our personal, private studio, these sessions are perfect for those who want to optimize their physical health in the safest and most efficient and effective manner possible.

Hydrotherapy Centre in Melbourne

dry needle acupuncture physiotherapy

By Michael Hall

If exercise is the greatest drug known to human kind, hydrotherapy must be the greatest therapy.

As the name suggests, hydrotherapy is therapy in water. In other words, it involves specific techniques, exercises and training that enhance physical recovery and performance.. As water provides buoyancy but also resistance, hydrotherapy takes the load off painful joints whist placing resistance on to muscles.

Hydrotherapy is therefore the ideal treatment modality for arthritis, chronic back pain, neck pain, post-operative rehabilitation, muscle strains, joint sprains, joint replacement surgery and in fact almost every physical problem.

Hydrotherapy is the ultimate compliment for “hands on” therapy and a land based rehabilitation program such as clinical pilates and is another tool that can help to accelerate and optimize your recovery.

To get maximum benefits from hydrotherapy, it is important that you perform your hydrotherapy program in a specifically designed hydrotherapy pool. There are few specific hydrotherapy pools in Melbourne and even fewer in Bayside, however, recently Bodywise Health was given access to use the Bayside Hydrotherapy Pool at Elanora located in Hampton / Brighton. This hydrotherapy pool in Bayside Hampton and Brighton also serves the wider Bayside areas of Elwood, Elsternwick, Sandringham, Highett, Cheltenham, Black Rock and Beaumaris.

Like Melbourne Hydrotherapy Centre or Melbourne Hydrotherapy, Bodywise Health is now able to offer you the benefits of enhanced pain relief, muscle strengthening, joint mobility, flexibility, balance, control, coordination and function that is uniquely delivered by advanced hydrotherapy programs.

With qualified, experienced, hydrotherapy physiotherapists guiding you, you can rest assured that you are in good hands and that you will achieve the best possible health care results in the safest most empowering environment.

Bodywise Health may also be found by googling Hydrotherapy Pool Melbourne, Hydrotherapy Pool Bayside, Hydrotherapy Pool Hampton, Hydrotherapy Pool Brighton, Hydrotherapy Pool Highett, Hydrotherapy Pool Sandringham and Hydrotherapy Pool Cheltenham.

If you want to take your health to the next level or accelerate and optimize your recovery, hydrotherapy is probably one of the best treatment modalities that you could undertake.

To take advantage of this proven, advanced therapy call Bodywise Health on 1 300 BODYWISE (263 994) now and start experiencing the benefits that only hydrotherapy treatment can deliver you.
